The first issue we are focusing on in Rutland is education. We want to understand the experience of students of color in the Rutland area: what challenges they face, where and how they are experiencing discrimination, and how teachers and administrators address the issues of race and diversity in the school.
We’ve begun by drafting surveys to send to the schools in the Rutland districts to try and establish a baseline of knowledge. We are working on surveys specific to different grade levels to get a baseline of student experience, as well as one for teachers and staff. We are currently reaching out to local schools with the goal of implementing the surveys in the fall of 2017.
