We are excited to be launching a month-long work group around Dr. Layla Saad’s “Me and White Supremacy” curriculum in February. As Dr. Saad describes, this opportunity is intended for “people holding white privilege to examine their complicity in white supremacy.” Our work together will be geared toward the white membership of the NAACP and other white community members. It is for those who are ready to begin or continue the work of learning to self-examine, asking ourselves complex and very personal questions about inner racism. This is with the caveat that all members of color are welcome of course, and in the event of their participation, facilitators will be alert to interrupt possible episodes of white fragility that might be triggering/traumatic.

The Me and White Supremacy workbook is a collection of 28 prompts for journaling and discussion to help participants discover and work through the ways that they are complicit in and benefit from a system that is designed to oppress and marginalize Black, Indigenous & People of Color.

Participation is open to the public but the group will be capped at 15 participants. There is no charge for this program, but we encourage participants to donate to Dr. Saad as they are able.
PLEASE NOTE:
All participants must come to our first session on February 6th session having read the first 11 chapters (pages 1 – 56) of Dr. Layla Saad’s Me and White Supremacy workbook, which is available for download at no charge, at this link. If for any reason you are concerned that you don’t have time to do this, you are not yet ready to engage in this work, and should not undertake it at this point in time. Signing up for this means thinking about the time commitment in advance, and carving out the time to do the work.
A note on time. When we as white people say that we wish we had the ‘time’ to do anti-racist work, are we thinking about the fact that people of color don’t get to choose whether or not they ‘have the time’ to be confronted with racism on a daily basis? Either we are ready to make the time to do this work full-throttle, or we are not yet ready for it. If you are making the commitment to do this work for 28 days, please go into it honoring your commitment fully. Dr. Saad has taken HER time to create this work and to give it freely for our benefit. Please respect her, yourself and our social justice community by knowing that if you take this on, it is one of your priorities for the month.
If you have any questions about this or any other aspect of this work, please feel free to contact Julie Conason, who is one of our facilitators for this work: julicona@gmail.com
