Action Alert – Equity in schools

Urgent Action Needed Today to protect Vermont schools

VT Secretary of Education Zoie Saunders has asked school districts to comply with the federal ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, demanding district leaders certify their compliance by April 10. While the Agency of Education (AOE) has framed this certification as merely “reaffirm[ing] our compliance with existing law,” the federal Department of Education demands that states and districts not only comply with Title VI, but also explicitly acknowledge that certain DEI practices may now be considered illegal. This request from the AOE is a shameful capitulation to an executive power grab and undermines Vermont’s commitment to every student.

Neighboring states such as Maine, New York, and Massachusetts have already rejected this demand. Take action today to tell the AOE to stand with our students, rescind this certification demand, and commit to protecting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our schools.

Parents, students, and community members can send a letter to key Vermont government officials. The language is this letter can also be copied to contact your local superintendent, school board members, and other school leaders.

Organizations, legislators, and school districts can sign on to an open letter to the AOE.

Please spread the word on this important, time-sensitive action!
